Blazers Finish Fall Season Undefeated Second Year In A Row

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- For the second year in a row, the UAB Blazers softball team has finished up their fall season undefeated. The team competed in two tournaments, on Oct. 5 and Oct. 20.
The Oct. 5th tournament paired up the Blazers with Jefferson State Community College, Jacksonville State and Central Alabama Community College. Results are listed below.
UAB vs. Jeff State CC 2-0 Soph. Sara Cristophel, 2-3, 2B; Fresh. Amanda Byrne, 2-3, 2B; Soph. Kris Lara, 1-1, 2B, SAC; Sen. Kelli Thompson, 5 perfect IP, 4K; Fresh. Alexis Kreske, 2 IP, 1 BB, 4K (combined no hitter).
UAB vs. Jacksonville State 2-0
Soph. Kris Lara, 1-3, HR; Jun. Amanda Ellis, 2-3; Soph. Kristin Stanfill, 3-3, 2B; Sen. Kerri Foster, 7 IP, 4K, 6 hits.
UAB vs. Central CC 6-0
Soph. Sara Christophel, 1-2, BB, SAC; Sen. Candice Hithe, 2BB, SAC; Sen. Cliffanie Engram, 2-3, 2 3B; Jun. Amanda Ellis, 1-3, 3B; Fresh. Andrea Pierson, 2-2; Redshirt Fresh. Carrie Christophel, 1-2; Jun. Tara Higashino and Fresh. Jennifer McClure combine for win, Central batters K'd 5 times and had 5 hits.
"Our athletes have worked extremely hard this fall," said head coach Marla Townsend. "They saw an improvement on the field as a result of their work."
The tournament on Oct. 20 showcased the freshmen and the newcomers to the team. Coaches split the athletes into two teams, UAB Green, featuring the freshmen and newcomers and UAB White, featuring the returnees. Results are listed below.
UAB Green
Vs. Springhill 4-3
Soph. Sara Christophel, 3-3, HBP, HR away from cycle; Fresh. Amanda Byrne, 1-3, 2B; Fresh. Jennifer McClure and Jun. Tara Higashino combined, 7 IP, 4K, 5 hits.
Vs. Martin Methodist 3-0
Jun. Beth Mullins, 1-3, 2B; Fresh. Andrea Pierson, 1-2; Jun. Tara Higashino, 1-2; Soph. Jen Hopkins, 1-2; Higashino and Fresh. Alexis Kreske combined no hitter, 4K, 1BB.
UAB White
Vs. Springhill 9-0
Sen. Candice Hithe, 1-3, HBP, 3 R; Sen. Cliffanie Engram, 2-3, 2B, HR, 2 R; Jun. Beth Mullins, 2-3, 2 2B, 2 R; Sen. Kelli Thompson, 6 IP (mercy rule: up by 8 after 5 innings), 3K, 2 hits, 1 BB.
Vs. Martin Methodist 7-0

"We are very pleased with the newcomer's performances this fall," said Townsend. "We look forward to them contributing to a successful spring season."
The Blazers look forward to their hard work paying off in the upcoming regular season beginning with a doubleheader against Troy State on Feb. 8. The team will compete in five tournaments during the regular season of play, including the Magic City Tournament where they will go against local teams from Birmingham Southern and Samford.
