BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB softball team has announced the signing of five recruits. Allison Davis, Kitty Hayes, Holly Krzan, Jenna Robison and Nicole Whitlock will join the Blazers in 2003. Information about the five signees is listed below.
Davis, a Center Fielder/Catcher, comes to UAB from Opelika HS where she hit .360 and had a .464 on base percentage last season. Opelika finished second in area and advanced to regionals where it took eventual 6A State Runner-Up Thompson High School to the third game, falling two games to one. Allison was on all-Area team this last spring as a designated hitter.
Hayes, a catcher/utility player from Rockmart Comprehensive High School in Rockmart, Ga. will graduate next spring. Hayes has completed her senior season as Georgia schools play in the fall. She will be UAB's second softball student-athlete from the state of Georgia. She was awarded her team's Golden Glove award three years in a row from her freshman year and was named all-area and all-state honorable mention those three years as well. This year's awards have yet to be announced. She also earned her Coaches Award her sophomore year and her teams' batting title last season. Rockmart HS team finished second at the 2002 area tournament making it to the sweet 16 sectional tournament.
Krzan hails from Hanford High School in West Richland, Wash. She was named to the Tri-City Herald All-Area Team and was an All-Mid Valley League pick for the past three years. She held the highest team batting average the past two years and won the Falcon Pride Award her sophomore year. Her junior year she was the Team MVP, hit the most home runs, and had the most hits. Krzan currently plays softball for the Washington Spirit Gold ASA team.
Robison is a middle infielder/outfielder from Clay-Chalkville High School coached by C.J. Urse. She currently plays for the Alabama State Champion Birmingham Vipers ASA team after previously playing for the Silver Bullets coached by Larry White. She hit .363 for the Silver Bullets with 10 doubles and a home run. She was a member of the 6A Alabama High School State Tournament team that was ranked No. 1 in the state of Alabama most of 2002. CCHS finished its 2002 season ranked in the top 10 in the state with a final record of 44-9. Robison was a member of the 2002 North All Star Team that won the two-game series against the South All Stars. She was an all-metro and all-state selection last season. She was also an all-tournament team selection for the Robert E. Lee and Jefferson County Tournaments. As a leadoff hitter she hit .362, three triples, and one home run with 19 RBI for her senior year. She was also the team leader with 17 doubles and 47 runs scored.
Whitlock, a shortstop/outfielder, comes to UAB from Mortimer-Jordan High School in Morris, Ala. During her seventh and ninth grade years (1998, 2000), Mortimer-Jordan's team was the 4A/5A Alabama State High School Fastpitch runners-up. In 1999 MJHS was state champion and Whitlock earned a spot on the all-sectional and all-state tournament teams. While her 2000 team finished as runner-up in state, Whitlock was again awarded with an all-sectional tournament team selection. She also earned an all-metro team spot and was the Offensive and Defensive Award winner for MJHS. She is coached by Rebecca Recke at MJHS and is a 2002 Wendy's High School Heisman Nominee and a Gatorade "Will to Win" award. In the summer of 2002, Whitlock hit .441 with five doubles, six triples, and a home run for the Xtremes coached by her father, Billy Whitlock and uncle, Richard Rouse.
"I am extremely excited about this recruiting class," said head coach Marla Townsend. "Not only are these young ladies very talented athletes, they are very committed to their academics as well. The three Alabama recruits (Davis, Robison and Whitlock) have all attended our softball camps. We've been fortunate to see them and help them grow as softball players. Kitty Hayes is our second recruit to come from the state of Georgia. She plays on a very competitive Atlanta Vipers Gold ASA team and will look to challenge Amanda Ellis, our catcher.
"We've also established a great recruiting line to the northwest corner of the country and landed our third top recruit in two years with Holly Krzan from the Washington Spirit Gold ASA team out of Tri Cities, Wash. She is looking to replace our outgoing All-C-USA shortstop Candice Hithe."
