Softball Hosts Five-Team Fall Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team will begin its 2003 fall season on Saturday as the Blazers play host to the 2003 UAB Fall Tournament held at George Ward Park Field #6. UAB is scheduled to face off against Jefferson State at 9 a.m., North Alabama at noon and South Alabama at 7:30 p.m.
"Our team has worked extremely hard since the beginning of fall practice and this tournament is a chance for them to put it all together and play as a team," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "They are all excited to begin playing against some competition and this is what they've been working towards this fall."
The field for Saturday's UAB Fall Tournament consists of Itawamba, Jefferson State, North Alabama, South Alabama and UAB. The Blazers open the round-robin competition against Jefferson State at 9 a.m. and will be followed by Jefferson State versus North Alabama at approximately 10:30 a.m.
UAB will then play its second game of the day at noon against North Alabama. All of the games will have an hour and 20-minute time limit, with a 10-minute break between games.
At 1:30 p.m., Jefferson State will face off against Itawamba prior to playing South Alabama at 3 p.m. The 4:30 p.m. matchup features South Alabama and Itawamba, while the 6 p.m. game includes Itawamba and North Alabama. UAB and South Alabama are scheduled to meet in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
"We have a good mix of returning players and talented newcomers this season," Townsend said. "All of the new players that have come in have been very versatile for us and have the ability to play any number of positions. We look forward to them contributing this weekend along with our returning players."
The UAB softball team will begin its 2003 fall season on Saturday, Oct. 4, as the Blazers kick off the UAB Fall Tournament at 9 a.m. against Jefferson State at George Ward Park Field #6. George Ward Park is located on Greensprings Highway and admission is free for all games.
