UAB Softball Defeats Tulsa and Louisiana Tech

In game one against Tulsa, the Blazers recorded both of their runs in the fourth inning when Cliffanie Engram singled to shortstop and advanced to second when Kelli Thompson grounded out to third base. Amanda Ellis tripled down the right field line and picked up her first RBI of the day, driving Engram home. Ellis then scored on a pass ball, giving the Blazers the 2-0 lead.
Tulsa (6-5) fought back in the fourth inning when Danielle Olsen hit a homerun over the right center field wall bringing the Hurricanes to within one of the Blazers.
The Blazers held off Tulsa for the final three innings, winning their first game of the tournament, 2-1.
Catcher Amanda Ellis went two for three during the game with a double and a triple to help the Blazers in the victory.
Kerri Foster (5-1) picked up her fifth win against the Hurricanes. Foster pitched the complete game, giving up five hits, four walks and striking out three.
Baylor (11-7) jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the day for UAB. In the first inning the Bears loaded the bases when Kelly Levesque walked and advanced to second on a single by Kim Wilmoth. Harmony Schwethelm singled to left center and notched two RBI on the hit. Sarah Caudle singled and advanced to second on a pass ball and April Luce singled to center field and recorded two RBI and bringing the Baylor lead to 4-0.
Baylor added two more runs in the second inning when Kelly Osburn hit a two run homerun over the left field wall, increasing the lead to 6-0.
Hithe went two for three at the plate against the Bears and added one stolen base.
Thompson (2-2) took the loss for the Blazers, pitching three innings, giving up seven hits, six runs (four earned) and striking out three.
The Baylor pitching staff held UAB to six hits and no runs in the game. UAB stranded nine people on base in the 6-0 loss to the Bears. The loss brings the Blazers to a 7-4 overall record.
In the final game of the day against Louisiana Tech (1-8), UAB put the first run on the scoreboard when Beth Mullins smashed the first UAB homerun of the tournament.
In the sixth inning Beth Mullins and Kris Lara hit back to back doubles adding another Blazer run to the scoreboard. Engram reached on an error and stole second base. On the steal, Lara scored on a bad throw from catcher to second base. Ellis was hit by a pitch and Carrie Christophel singled to center field. Sara Christophel singled to center field and notched two RBI on the hit, making the final 8-1.
The Blazers will be back in action Sunday at the Compass Bank Invitational. UAB's opponent will be determined by the outcome of the final game on Saturday.
