Women's Tennis Gets Win Over Jacksonville State, 4-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis team (5-3, 2-1) was victorious over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 4-1, here Tuesday afternoon at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
"I thought we played very well in doubles," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "I'm sorry that Natascha Immele suffered her first loss of the season, but she's been battling for our team all season and, today, the team battled for her."
UAB took the doubles point, winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Blazers Nadia Dellarciprete and Yvonne Ernst beat JSU's Elisa Benhaim and Heather Miller, 8-2, in the No. 2 tilt. UAB's Femke de Boer and Julia Hoch won in the No. 3 match, defeating Gamecocks Zeynep Gurkaynak and Gaby Baca, 8-1.
The No. 1 doubles match between UAB's Natascha Immele and Ornischa Maier-Knapp and Jacksonville State's Sally Pearson and Michelle Dushner was stopped after the Blazers clinched the doubles point.
In singles, UAB won three of four matches, as the final two contests were stopped when the Blazers claimed victory. At the No. 2 position, UAB's de Boer beat the Gamecocks' Benhaim, 6-2, 6-1. Blazer Ernst continued the winning, defeating JSU's Gurkaynak, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 3 tilt. At the No. 4 position, UAB's Maier-Knapp beat Jacksonville State's Dushner, 6-2, 6-0.
Blazer Hoch did not finish her match against JSU's Miller at the No. 5 position, while the No. 6 match between Dellarciprete and Baca was also stopped early.
Immele was the only Blazer to lose in singles, dropping to JSU's Pearson, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 1 match. The loss was Immele's first of the season. She had won seven straight matches this season.
Next, UAB hosts Samford on Thursday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at George Ward Park.
