BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---The UAB softball team will be in search of a Conference USA tournament berth when it plays host to the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss this weekend at George Ward Park.
The Blazers play the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader on Saturday before meeting USM in a single game Sunday, both starting at 1 p.m.
The Blazers (27-24, 9-12 C-USA) must win two-of-three games against Southern Miss to be guaranteed a spot in the C-USA tournament for the second year in a row. If the Golden Eagles take two-of-three from UAB, they will go to the tournament.
Southern Miss (25-27, 10-11 C-USA) holds an 8-3 series lead over UAB. The Blazers last met the Golden Eagles in 2002 at the C-USA tournament where UAB defeated Southern Miss in two games, 6-0, and 2-1. The two victories over the Golden Eagles sent UAB to the C-USA championship game against DePaul.
The Blazers enter this weekend's series after dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker at Samford earlier this week. UAB was defeated in the 10th inning by a squeeze bunt as the Bulldogs took the narrow victory on Tuesday.
At Saturday's game, fans will be able to purchase 25 cent hot dogs while supplies last and on Sunday, UAB will honor its four seniors Cliffanie Engram, Candice Hithe, Kerri Foster and Kelli Thompson. These seniors represent the final year for the inaugural team of 2000. All four seniors were part of the first team and have contributed to the success and development of the program.
