CHICAGO --- The UAB cross country team recorded the best finish in Blazer history at the Conference USA championships with a third-place finish here on Saturday morning. Elizabeth Ambrus was UAB's top-finisher, in third overall.
The Blazers tallied two individual honors as, Elizabeth Hilligoss was named Conference USA's Freshman of the Year and Ambrus was named First Team All-Conference USA.
"We ran really well," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "Elizabeth Ambrus ran a super race, as she has all year for us. Elizabeth Hilligoss ran an incredible race and was very gutsy for a freshman. Another freshman, Whitney Mays was super as well. Whitney is really coming on at the end of the year. Overall, it was a great job as a team. We're really looking forward to regionals at Alabama."
Ambrus was UAB's top finisher, placing third, with a time of 21:25 in the 6K race, while Hilligoss tallied a seventh-place finish, recording a time of 22:05. UAB's other freshman, Whitney Mays, placed 27th finishing the course in 23:00. Sophomore Jennifer Thompson was 30th, tallying a time of 23:14. Sophomore Ryanne Fortney placed 32nd overall, pacing a time of 23:27. UAB's final two finishers were Petra Ivanova, who placed 38th (23:37) and Genoah Collins, who finished in 47th place (23:56).
The Blazers recorded 101 points in the contest. UAB finished only eight points behind second-place TCU's 93 points. Marquette repeated as champion with 66 points in the meet.
UAB will participate in the NCAA South Region Championships on Nov. 13 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
