UAB Cross Country Places Fourth At Belmont Invitational

NASHVILLE ----- The UAB cross country team began the 2004 season with a fourth-place finish in the Belmont Invitational here on Friday. The Blazers had four runners finish in the top-20 in the event.
Sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus was UAB's top finisher, placing third overall in the 4K run with a time of 14:35.16.
Sophomore Jennifer Thompson placed 11th overall with a time of 15:03.61, while freshmen Elizabeth Hilligoss (15:08.93) and Petra Ivanova (15:17.59) placed 17th and 20th in their first collegiate cross country meets.
UAB had seven more runners in the 118-runner field. Sophomore Ryanne Fortney was 28th overall with a time of 15:30.93, freshman Genoah Collins finished 53rd with a time of 16:11.69 and freshman Christi Walton (16:23.31) was 68th. Freshman Whitney Mays placed 74th overall, completing the run in 16:32.10, while sophomore Maureen McDonald's time of 17:12.53 gave her a 94th-place finish. Sophomore Mary Kim Webb (17:48.30) and junior Elizabeth Anderson (19:08.81) wrapped up UAB's performance, placing 105th and 111th overall.
Samford took the team title with 39 points, while UAB's runners tallied 79 points, ahead of fifth-place Alabama's total of 151. Last year's champion, Vanderbilt, placed second overall with 62 points.
UAB will next compete in the Memphis Nighttime Classic on Sept., 10, in Memphis.
