BOWLING GREEN, Ky. --- The UAB cross country team placed six runners in the top 15 as the Blazers took first place in 23rd annual Old Timers Classic here Saturday.
The Blazers were led by sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus, who took the individual title for the second-consecutive meet.
"Everyone ran very well for us today," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "This was a great race for us on a great course. Once again, Elizabeth was tremendous and had another victory."
Ambrus claimed the title in the 5K event with a time of 17:11.19. Her time was the fifth-fastest time in the history of the event, held at Kaerinekas Park since 1982. The win was Ambrus' second straight as she was victorious at the Memphis Twilight Classic last Saturday and was named Conference USA's co-athlete of the week on Tuesday.
Freshman Elizabeth Hilligoss was fourth overall with a time of 17:57.75, while sophomore Jennifer Thompson placed fifth after running an 18:01.84. Sophomore Ryanne Fortney was eighth, recording a time of 18:21.07. Freshmen Petra Ivanova (18:33.37) and Whitney Mays (18:38.08) placed 11th and 14th respectively.
The Blazers took the team title with 29 points, 10 better than second-place Eastern Kentucky's 39. Western Kentucky was third overall in the eight-school field with a total of 46 points.
The Blazers will next be in action on Oct. 2, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.
