MEMPHIS, Tenn. ----- UAB sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus captured the individual title as she led the Blazer cross country team to a second place finish here Saturday at the Memphis Twi-Light Cross Country Classic.
Ambrus ran a time of 16:59.11 to beat runner-up Katarina Lovrantova of Arkansas-Little Rock (17:09.01) in the individual standings.
UAB (61 points) finished just behind Mississippi State (58) in the team standings while Eastern Kentucky (87) was third, Southern Illinois (88) fourth and Harding University (91).
The Blazers, who finished fourth in their first fall meet last weekend at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, Tenn., also got a 13th place performance from sophomore Jennifer Thompson (17:49.79) and a 14th place effort from freshman Petra Ivanova (17:50.44).
Also finishing in the top 20 were sophomore Ryanne Fortney at 18:03.26 and freshman Elizabeth Hilligas at 18:06.92.
"This was a great meet for us," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "First of all, it was a new experience for us to run a meet at night, and the girls performed well. This is probably the best race we've run since I've been here in terms of the girls running together."
