UAB Women's Tennis Defeats Saint Louis, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team won its first match of the 2004 season as it defeated Conference USA foe Saint Louis, 5-2, here Friday afternoon.
"We feel lighter than air right now," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Getting our first win of the season is big, especially over a conference opponent. Also, this was our first home match of the season, so that makes it even more special. It feels really good to have a win under our belts."
UAB (1-4, 1-2) started the match by taking the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. In the No. 2 spot, UAB's Femke de Boer and Julia von Samson defeated Saint Louis' Ana Renda and Melissa Cutler, 8-1. The Blazers' Nadia Dellarciprete and Samrin Tanzeem were winners over SLU's Lindsay Winninger and Rebecca Steer, 8-1 in the No. 3 match.
The Blazers' lone doubles loss came in the No. 1 slot, as UAB's Annemieke Elsholz and Marrit Jansma fell to Saint Louis' Katerina Lozanova and Amanda Hellberg, 8-2.
The winning continued for UAB, as it took four of six singles matches. The Blazers' Elsholz was victorious over SLU's Hellberg, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 tilt. In the No. 4 position, the Billikens' Cutler fell to UAB's von Samson, 6-2, 6-0. Nadia Dellarciprete of UAB was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over SLU's Winninger in the No. 5 match. At the No. 6 position, the Blazers' Tanzeem defeated Saint Louis' Steer, 6-1, 6-0.
Saint Louis (1-7, 0-2) claimed its two wins in singles. The Billikens' Lozanova beat UAB's de Boer, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot. SLU's Renda was a three-set winner over Blazers' Jansma by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the No. 3 tilt.
The Blazers host Florida State on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brook Highland Racquet Club before traveling to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
