UAB Women's Tennis Wins At Samford, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The women's tennis team recorded a 5-2 win over Samford University on the Bulldogs' courts here Wednesday afternoon. The match was a continuation of an earlier match last month that was halted due to rain.
"This was the best Samford team we've faced in years," said head coach Mert Ertunga. "It was a good victory in a close match. Once again, the bottom half of our lineup came through for us."
The Blazers (10-12, 4-4) had clinched the doubles point before the earlier match was postponed by winning all three matches. In No. 1 doubles, UAB's Femke de Boer and Marrit Jansma defeated the Bulldogs' Emily Nunnally and Katie Crawford, 8-3. At the No. 2 spot, the Blazers' Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson beat Samford's Sarah McKey and Emily White, 8-4. In the No. 3 position, the Bulldogs' Bethany Benson and Jen Pharr fell to UAB's Nadia Dellarciprete and Samrin Tanzeem, 8-6.
UAB won four of six singles matches, including all three at the bottom half of the lineup. The Blazers' von Samson and Tanzeem were both three-set winners. UAB's Elsholz was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over the Bulldogs' Crawford in the No. 2 tilt. In the No. 4 slot, von Samson defeated Samford's McKey, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. At the No. 5 position, the Bulldogs' Pharr fell to UAB's Dellarciprete, 7-5, 6-3. In the No. 6 spot, the Blazers' Tanzeem beat Samford's Benson, 6-4, 7-5, 10-7.
Samford's Nunnally was a 7-6, 6-4 winner over the Blazers' de Boer in the No. 1 tilt, while the Bulldogs' White defeated UAB's Jansma, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 3 match.
The Blazers will travel to Georgia State to face the Lady Panthers at 3 p.m. on Friday.
