UAB Cross Country Dominates Evansville Invitational

EVANSVILLE, Ind. --- In its final regular-season meet, the UAB cross country team dominated the Evansville Invitational here Saturday morning as Elizabeth Ambrus took the individual title and the Blazers placed all seven runners in the top-15.
UAB tallied three career bests and four season bests in the 5K race at the UE Cross Country Course.
Ambrus recorded a season-best time of 17:23.75 en route to the individual title, beating her nearest competitor, Valparaiso's Laura Rolf by more than 28 seconds.
Junior Jennifer Thompson also had a season-best with a time of 18:09.93, as she placed third. Elizabeth Hilligoss had her best meet of the season, by far, running the course in 18:12.29 and placing fourth, both season bests for the sophomore.
The Blazers had two more runners in the top 10. Sophomore Whitney Mays had a career-best time of 18:34.76, placing ninth, while freshman Jakia Williams tallied a 10th-place finish with a time of 18:38.04, also a career best.
Freshman Katie Stepp was 12th-overall for the Blazers with a career-best time of 18:41.96, while junior Ryanne Fortney placed 15th, running the course in a season best 18:57.27.
UAB tallied 27 points in the meet, finishing ahead of second-place Valparaiso's 56 points. The Blazers' seven runners averaged a time of 18:11.76.
The Blazers will take a week off before competing in the Conference USA Championship on Oct. 29th in Orlando, Fla.
