BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball program has signed two local standouts during the early signing period, head coach Marla Townsend announced Tuesday. The Blazers signed catcher Krystal Johnson from Gardendale High School and second baseman Cameron Skates from McAdory High School for the 2006 class. Both players hit over .400 last year and have received numerous honors during their careers.
"I am proud to sign these two outstanding student-athletes," said Townsend. "I have seen both Krystal and Cameron play for several years as well as working with them at UAB Softball camps. These young ladies really compliment each other and are a welcomed addition to an outstanding group of upper-classmen."
Johnson was named the All-Area Player of the Year by the North Jefferson News after she hit .481 including 71 RBIs and 24 doubles in 2005. She was named to the class 5A all-state team for the last three season by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Johnson won the Gardendale Offensive Award in 2005 and earned the Defensive Award in 2004. During the summer, Johnson plays for the Elite Force under Eddie Lee.
She is an exceptional athlete and has also made great contributions to the Gardendale volleyball team. Johnson helped the Rockets advance to the class 5A state tournament and finish seventh in the state of Alabama.
"Krystal is a very solid catcher," said Townsend. "She has a great work ethic and there is no limit as to how good she can become during her years as a Blazer. Her enthusiasm and love of the game are second to none. We expect Krystal to make a quick impact at the plate, both as a catcher and as a hitter."
Skates received the McAdory Offensive Player Award for the last three years while playing for head coach Jennifer Smith. She won the Hustle Award during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Skates hit .474 over 50 games during her junior season including 33 RBIs and five home runs. She helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a 36-14 mark as they finished in the top six in the state of Alabama. She was recognized by the Birmingham News when she was named to the 2005 All-Metro Team. Skates also participated on the AHSAA North All-Star Team.
She has played with the Alabama Vipers for the last six years under Larry Willis. During her time with the Vipers she has hit over .400 every year and has helped guide them to four ASA National Tournaments. "Cameron brings a very consistent glove, as well as a powerful stick," said Townsend. "She is a physically powerful and gifted gamer who loves to be challenged. I look forward to seeing her on the field wearing green and gold."
UAB opens the 2006 season at the Centenary College Tournament on Feb. 17 against Nicholls State and Arkansas.
