BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samrin Tanzeem won her 10th straight singles match, beating Babette Lombardo, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4 singles, and UAB downed in-state rival Jacksonville State, 6-0, Thursday afternoon in college women's tennis action at Brook Highland Racquet Club. Tanzeem is now 10-1 in singles play this spring and the Blazers have won five straight matches.
"Samrin is probably our most improved player this year, in relation to last season," UAB head coach Mert Ertunga said. "She does what she does and does it well."
UAB (9-3) won each of the six singles matches in straight sets. The singles sets were played before doubles because of cold temperatures and light drizzle in the Birmingham area on Thursday. Gulsah Esen downed Zeynep Gurkaynak, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Ornischa Maier-Knapp won, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 over JSU's Michelle Dushner. Julia von Samson of UAB took a 7-5, 6-4 decision at No. 3 singles while Tanzeem won at No. 4. Annemieke Elsholz downed Layla Abby, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Jana Wild closed out UAB's sweep at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Whitney Collins. Jacksonville State's record evened at 7-7 on the year.
"The match was another where our depth helped us," Ertunga added. "It was also a good match in preparation for two tough matches we have this weekend."
The Blazers continue Conference USA play at 11 a.m. CT Saturday when they face Louisville at Brook Highland. The match was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but was moved up to accommodate the Cardinals' travel schedule. UAB then faces Murray State at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, also at Brook Highland.
