UAB Softball Team Swept In Doubleheader By Troy

TROY, Ala. - The UAB softball team was swept by Troy in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at the Lady Trojan Softball Complex.
The Blazers (11-17) lost by a score of 10-0 in the first game of the day and then fell 10-4 in game two. UAB's record in doubleheaders dropped to 3-3.
The Blazers lost their third-straight game after dropping an 8-3 decision to Mississippi State on Tuesday in Birmingham. UAB will begin Conference USA play next week as the Blazers welcome East Carolina to Birmingham for a two-game series beginning Tuesday at George Ward Park.
Jocelyn McCallum (6-1) was the winner for Troy in game one as she pitched three solid innings, allowing just two hits while striking out eight and walking none. Brittany Hodge took the loss to fall to 1-6. She allowed 10 runs on eight hits in four innings of work, walking seven and striking out three.
The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning. Sally Jones lifted a one-out fly ball to centerfield, which looked as if it would be caught easily by Lindsay Stanley, but the ball glanced off of her glove and fell to the ground to score the first run. UAB starting pitcher Brittany Hodge then proceeded to walk in Stacey Dwyer and Amanda Ragans to make it 3-0, and Brittany Krbec followed with an RBI single to right to make it 4-0.
UAB had a pair of runners on base with two outs in the top of the second, but McCallum struck out Amanda Byrne looking to end the inning. The Blazers only left three runners on base for the game but managed just three hits against McCallum and reliever Michelle Grinage.
Tamra Howren ripped an RBI single to right-center field in the second inning to make it 5-0 and then Bonnie Belin laced a two-run double to the left-field corner to make it 7-0. Troy added three more in the bottom of the third to take a comfortable 10-0 lead.
The Blazers took a 1-0 lead after their first at-bat in game two as Chelsea McCall scored on a passed ball with two outs. Howren tied the game at 1-1 as she doubled home Boyd in the bottom half of the first and then Boyd had a two-out single to left in the second to make it 2-1.
UAB evened the score in the third as McCall collected an RBI single to right. The Trojans went up 4-2 in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a solo home run from Howren to make it 3-2. Troy made it 8-2 after plating four more runs in the fourth inning.
Amanda Antonovich fell to 3-6 with the loss in game two. She lasted three innings and yielded four runs on eight hits. She did not walk or strike out a batter. Jennifer Nelson came in to relieve Antonovich and allowed six runs, three earned, and three hits in three innings. Nelson walked seven and struck out three.
Kacie Flinn was the winner for the Trojans to up her record to 6-5. She pitched five innings and allowed one run and two hits. She walked two struck out eight. Lanie Harcourt went the final two innings and allowed two runs and two hits while walking none and striking out two.
Kris Lara belted a two-run home run, her second this season, in the top of the sixth to cut the Trojans' lead in half and make it 8-4. Troy added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain its six-run lead.
The Blazers will have the weekend off before opening conference play next week as UAB plays host to East Carolina beginning Tuesday at George Ward Park.
