UAB Softball Team Drops Rubber Game To USF, 8-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team dropped the rubber game of its three-game Conference USA-series against the USF Bulls on Sunday by a score of 8-2 at George Ward Park.
The Blazers (19-28, 5-10 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead after an inning but fell behind 5-1 and could not recover against the Bulls, who improved to 28-20 overall and 7-5 in C-USA play. UAB took game one of the series on Saturday by a score of 7-1 and then fell 7-2 in the second game.
Bree Spence (13-11) worked 6 2/3 innings for the Bulls to pick up the win, allowing only two runs, one earned, and five hits. She walked none and struck out one batter. Erica Mascarenas fell to 5-5 with the loss as she gave up five runs, two earned, and six hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work. She walked one and struck out one.
Right fielder Lindsay Stanley reached on an error to lead off the first inning for UAB and was sacrificed to second by left fielder Chelsea McCall. Stanley then took third on a passed ball before Sara Christophel was retired on a fly out to right. Kris Lara, though, picked her up with a two-out double which scored Stanley to give the Blazers an early 1-0 advantage.
USF responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Christie Chapman doubled home a run with two outs and Krista Holle followed with a two-run single in the frame. Carly Griffin's two-run home run in the top of the third inning extended USF's lead to 5-1.
The teams played scoreless ball for the next three innings before the Bulls added three more in the top of the seventh to go up 8-1 before the Blazers scored one in the bottom half on three hits. Lara led the Blazers with two hits while Griffin and Spence each had two hits apiece. Tiffany Stewart had three hits and one RBI for the Bulls.
Freshman left-hander Amanda Antonovich relived Mascarenas and pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out a pair.
The Blazers will face the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Starkville, Miss., in their next game. The contest is a makeup of a game which was originally scheduled for March 22 but was rained out.
