Blazers Finish Third At Memphis Twilight Classic

Memphis, Tenn. --- The UAB cross country team placed third in the Memphis Twilight Classic here Saturday night, as three Blazers placed in the top-20 and Whitney Mays and Jennifer Thompson each set new career marks.
UAB was led by junior Elizabeth Ambrus, who finished fourth with a time of 17:23.64, her first top-five finish of the season.
Mays, a sophomore, placed 10th in the event, with a time of 17:40.67, besting her previous three-mile record by over one minute. It was the second-straight week that Mays set a career mark, as she tallied a new high in the 4K Belmont Opener last week. Thompson, a junior, improved her personal record, with a time of 17:42.72, good for 11th-place in the event.
In her first action of the season, sophomore Elizabeth Hilligoss placed 26th overall in Memphis, with a time of 18:27.29.
UAB then had three runners finish together, as freshman Katie Stepp ran the course in 18:38.68, good enough for 30th, junior Ryanne Fortney was 31st (18:41.45) and freshman Jakia Williams placed 32nd (18:42.19).
Freshmen Tracy Rowan, 71st overall, and Tara Gruber, 80th, rounded out the Blazers' performance.
Harding University won the title with 49 points, while Arkansas-Little Rock tallied 75 points, for second place. The Blazers recorded 80 points, 30 points ahead of forth-place Western Kentucky.
UAB will next participate in the Alabama Crimson Classic on Sept. 17, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
