BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB cross country team competes this Saturday, September 24, in the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C. The Blazers, who took last weekend off, will participate in a 5K race beginning at 10:55 a.m. (ET) at the SAS Soccer Park. The meet includes 23 cross country races and features Nike's Great Races of America for high schools and college.
UAB will compete in the Nike Race of Champions division with 12 other college teams. Included in the race will be BYU, Charlotte, Duke, N.C. State, Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia, among others.
"This will be our best test this season," said head coach Ray Stanfield. "The Great American Cross Country Festival has traditionally drawn some of the best teams in the nation. We are in the Nike Race of Champions and have our work cut out for us. Elizabeth Hilligoss is healthier than she has been all year and as a team, I think we are ready to run our best race of the year."
In their last race, the Blazers placed third in the Memphis Twilight Classic on September 10. Three UAB runners placed in the top-20 and Whitney Mays and Jennifer Thompson each set new career marks. UAB was led by junior Elizabeth Ambrus, who finished fourth with a time of 17:23.64 and had her first top-five finish of the season.
