TROY, Ala. ----- The UAB cross country team, led by an individual runner-up finish by Genoah Collins, finished first here Saturday in the Coach O Invitational hosted by Troy University.
Collins, an 800-meter specialist on the UAB track team, ran the 5K race in a time of 12:28.11, just behind Tricia Milton of Birmingham Southern who clocked a 12:17.97.
Seven teams and 56 runners competed in the meet held at the Jesse H. Colley Track & Field Complex.
The Blazers claimed the team title with a score of 52 points, followed by Birmingham Southern with 60, Alabama State at 61 and Troy with 97. Rounding out the team scoring were South Alabama in fifth place with 102 points, followed by Florida A&M at 125 and Alabama A&M with 183.
UAB freshman Kendel Hood was the Blazers' second runner to cross the finish line as she placed sixth (12:51.01), followed by teammate Jakia Williams in 14th (13:09.31) and Katie Horton in 16th (13:10.84). Abby Speights was UAB's final scorer in 23rd place with a time of 13:36.38 while Thela Woodring was 25th (13:39.57) and Tara Gruber 48th (15:34.16).
"It was a great race by Genoah," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "For a half-miler to have that kind of range to be able to run cross country says a lot. Our freshmen girls have done well. They have two times as our primary team and we've won twice. That's great for the depth of this team."
UAB's next meet will be Saturday, Oct. 28 as the Blazers travel to Greenville, N.C. to compete in the 2006 Conference USA Championships.
