STARKVILLE, Miss. ----- The UAB women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season as the Blazers were defeated, 6-1, by Mississippi State Thursday afternoon. With the loss, UAB dropped to 3-1 on the season.

"The girls really put in a good effort today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "We were right in every match, but couldn't pull them out. Basically, we couldn't win the big points."

Mississippi State (1-4) started the match by taking the doubles point after wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. At the No. 2 spot, MSU's Martina Banikova and Elna de Villiers beat UAB's Ornischa Maier-Knapp and Gulsah Esen, 8-4. In the No. 3 tilt, the Lady Bulldogs' Renee Joseph and Daniela Juskova were 8-6 winners over Antonia Nugent and Seden Soyalp of UAB.

Blazers Julia von Samson and Annemieke Elsholz defeated Mississippi State's Polina Kokoulina and Anastasia Kugakolova, 8-7(4) in the No. 1position.

UAB's von Samson tallied the Blazers' lone point with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Joseph in the No. 2 slot.

Mississippi State won the remaining five singles matches for the victory.

Next, the Blazers host Arkansas State Saturday at Brook Highland Racquet Club at 11 a.m.
