UAB Men's Tennis Blanks Birmingham-Southern, 7-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB men's tennis team won the doubles point and all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 victory over Birmingham-Southern Thursday afternoon at the BSC Tennis Complex.
"We started out a little shaky in doubles, but we were able to win the point," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "The doubles matches were very close, but we improved in singles play. We were able to win all but one singles match in straight-sets."
The match started with doubles competition. In the No. 2 spot, UAB's duo of Sebastian Falk and Andre Maier were 8-1 winners over Martin Crockett and David Ray. Falk and Maier are currently the 42nd-ranked tandem in the nation.
At the No. 3 position, Blazers Johannes Spangenberg and Adrian Tollstam fell to Mauricio Engler and Matt Mabry, 8-6, but that was UAB's only loss of the afternoon.
In the No. 1 tilt, Birmingham-Southern's Thomas Richter and Richard Walsh jumped out to a 5-3 lead. However, UAB's Anton Mavrin and Kristijan Mitrovski rallied for five-straight points to win 8-5 and give the Blazers the doubles point.
UAB (2-1) used the momentum of the doubles victory in the singles competition. The Blazers' Maier started things off by blanking Crockett, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 4 slot, while Thomas Weiss of UAB was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Mabry in the No. 6 match.
Falk then clinched the match for the Blazers with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ray in the No. 3 spot.
UAB's Spangenberg recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Walsh in the No. 5 position, while Mavrin tallied a tough 6-1, 7-6 (3), victory over Engler in the No. 2 tilt.
In the No. 1 slot, Blazer Mitrovski lost the first set, but rallied for the 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 win over Richter. Richter's first-set victory was the only one of the day for the Panthers.
The Blazers take on Samford Saturday at 2 p.m.
