UAB Men's Tennis Team Defeats UC Riverside, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team, playing its first match in 10 days, opened a busy week impressively here Monday, defeating visiting California-Riverside by a 6-1 score.
The Blazers (7-3) claimed the doubles point with wins at two of three positions, then reeled off wins at five of six singles spots, all of the singles victories coming in straight sets.
Anton Mavrin teamed with Kristijan Mitrovski at No. 1 doubles to defeat UCR's Mark Contreras and Christian Frick, 8-6, while UAB's tandem of Sebastian Falk and Andre Maier downed Joe Cartledge and Norman Tam, also by an 8-6 score.
In singles, the Blazers' Mavrin outlasted Norman Tam, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 with Falk posting a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 position over Cartledge. UAB also got wins at No. 4 with Maier defeating Bobby Tam, 6-2, 6-1; at No. 5 with Johannes Spangenberg downing Christian Frick, 7-6, 6-1; and at No. 6 as Kruno Despotovski defeated UCR¹s Gorjan Kovacevic, 6-0, 6-0.
California-Riverside's (8-6) only win in the match came at the No. 2 singles position as Contreras beat the Blazers¹ Mitrovskim 6-4, 7-6.
UAB now heads west as the Blazers will three matches in four days, starting Wednesday when they play at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. On Friday, UAB plays at California-Irvine and a day later, will meet Northern Arizona, also to be played at Irvine, Calif.
