BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's tennis team took the doubles point and swept through singles play, en route to a 7-0 victory over Jacksonville State Wednesday afternoon. The Blazers won all six singles matches in straight sets, as they improved to 6-4 on the season.
"Both teams were short handed but I'm very happy with the way we played today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "The girls took every point serious and I thought we played better, as a team. Our doubles teams played well. We played with different combinations in doubles and still managed to win the point. We have to continue to improve and prepare for Tennessee-Martin Friday."
UAB took the doubles point in convincing fashion, handily winning all three spots. In the No. 1 tilt, Blazers Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp were 8-4 winners over Layla Abby and Eloah Lopes. At the No. 2 position, UAB's Annemieke Elsholz and Antonia Nugent beat Marcia Barnes and Babette Lombardo, 8-1. Blazers Seden Soyalp and Samrin Tanzeem defeated Jacksonville State's Adriana Borda and Alexandra Georgakopoulos, 8-2, in the No. 3 slot.
The Blazers continued to dominate in the singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 match, UAB's Maier-Knapp tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lombardo. In No. 2 singles, Blazer Elzholz was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Lopes. UAB's Esen blanked Abby, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot.
The bottom half of UAB's lineup held up their end of the bargain as well. In the No. 4 tilt, Blazer Tanzeem recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win against Borda. At the No. 5 position, UAB's Nugent beat Barnes, 6-4, 6-0, while Blazer Soyalp defeated Georgakopoulos, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 6 slot.
