HOOVER, Ala. ----- Senior Elizabeth Ambrus won the individual title and UAB took the team crown here Saturday at the Great American Cross Country Festival.
The Blazers won the Nike Race of Champions, defeating No. 5-ranked BYU and 13 other schools. UAB finished with 41 points to the Cougars' 55. Ambrus was one of four Blazers to finish in the top 10 individually.
Freshman Kristina Olsen placed fifth, Katie Stepp in ninth and Whitney Mays in 10th place. Jennifer Thompson was the other Blazer to score in the meet as she finished in the No. 20 position.
"This is a big win for us beating a top 10 team," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "We had a great team effort and Elizabeth was outstanding for us. I was also really pleased with our freshman group. Our depth is really starting to show."
UAB also fielded a team in the "B" division race and placed second.
UAB has now won all three of its meets it has competed in this fall. The Blazers won the Belmont Opener Sept. 2 at Nashville, Tenn. and a week later, with a squad primarily made of freshmen, took the team title at the UAH Invitational.
The meet, held at Spain Park High School, included high school and university teams from all across the country for the one-day event.
