Blazers Cruise Past Memphis, 75-59, In Conference Opener

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The UAB women's basketball team got its conference season started in a good way by winning its Conference USA opening game over the Memphis Lady Tigers, 75-59, Tuesday evening at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Blazers saw their overall record improve to 6-7 and move to 1-0 in league play.
UAB was led by senior Carmen Guzman with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Guzman tallied 16 of her 23 points during the first half on her way to her 13th consecutive game in double figures.
Freshman Amanda Scott tied her career-high with nine points on 4-of-6 from the field, including one from behind the arc. Junior Diamond Rogers added eight points and Shimena Moore, LaKitha Murray and Christon Ingram tallied six points each towards the Blazer victory.
Murray also had a big night on the boards for UAB, grabbing a team-best seven rebounds. Sophomore Britney Jones led the Blazers in assists with six and Rogers had a team-high three steals.
Memphis had a trio of players in double figures, including Ashley Thornton and Devin Necaise with 13 points each. Se'erra Fantroy added 11 points for the Lady Tigers.
Next up for the Blazers is a Conference USA matchup with defending champion Tulsa on Friday, January 5 at 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
