BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB softball team split two games as it took part in the "Knockin' Cancer Out Of The Ballpark" tournament that raised over $17,000 for children's cancer research Saturday.
The Blazers played their final games of the fall season and finished with a 6-1 record and head coach Marla Townsend said that her team accomplished their goals that were set out at the beginning of the year.
"Our players have been working hard for the last three weeks individually, and it really showed today," Townsend said. "We had great adjustments during at-bats and our pitchers looked strong this fall. Hopefully we can continue to build off of this."
The Blazers took part in the event which benefited the Children's Hospital of Birmingham. Ceremonial first pitches were thrown out by patients of the hospital before the start of day-long event that Townsend called a touching experience for her team.
"Our lives were touched today. Meeting some of these young boys and girls and their families was great," Townsend said. "It was an honor for us to even be invited to participate in this event."
Seniors Holly Krzan and Jennifer Nelson guided the Blazers to a 2-0 win in three innings over UAH in game one. Nelson struck out six batters, including the side to end the game. Krzan added the run support in the top of the third inning with her 2-run home run, that hit high off the scoreboard in left field.
The Blazers fell in game two to Samford 1-0 in five innings, as a squeeze bunt brought in the game winning run.
UAB's defense helped keep the Blazers in both games, as the outfield cut down three runners at home on the day, including one against Samford in the bottom of the fourth inning that would have been the game winning run.
Junior Kayla Harris pitched five innings in game two and struck out four. Senior Leigh Walker recorded two doubles on the day.
