AUBURN, Ala. -- The UAB softball team finished the Auburn Tiger Invitational with a 5-1 loss to the hosting Tigers. Jennifer Nelson and Holly Krzan earned all-tournament honors. Nelson picked up two wins and batted .500 through five games, while Krzan hit .462 with four doubles, a homerun and five RBI. The Blazers fall to 4-5 on the season.
Auburn pitcher Holly Currie helped her own cause with a laser over the leftfield wall to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers (5-7) added to their lead in the third on a two-RBI single from Auburn rightfielder Sara Ghezzi.
Down 3-0 in the fourth, the Blazers came to life when Nelson and Leigh Walker both walked to put runners at first and second. Allison Davis singled, scoring Nelson and cutting the Tigers' lead to two.
Auburn answered with two more runs in the fifth to cap off the scoring and take the 5-1 victory. Auburn pitcher Anna Thompson (2-3) relieved Currie in the fourth and picked up the win for the Tigers.
Nelson (3-2) delivered another strong performance on both sides of the ball, striking out 10 through six innings of work and extending her hitting streak to eight games.
The Blazers went 2-3 in the tournament and look to bounce back from the loss in their home opener on Tuesday. UAB will host Jacksonville State for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
