BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team lost to Mississippi State, 6-1, at Brook Highland Racquet Club Saturday afternoon. Senior Julia von Samson was the lone UAB victor in the match. The loss was the first of the season for the Blazers who are now 3-1.
The Blazers were swept in the doubles competition with the most competitive match being at flight one where von Samson and junior Gulsah Esen forced play to a tiebreaker, but came up just short.
"We lost 6-1 but I felt that we played positive tennis," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "In doubles, we maybe played the best overall match. Mississippi State was a very deep and talented team. Now we have to get ready for another important match tomorrow."
In singles play, Esen lost at No. 1, while senior Nischa Maier-Knapp lost at No. 2, 6-2, 7-6. Von Samson won in straight sets at flight three, 6-4, 7-5 and freshman Magdalena Czernik lost at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3. Senior Samrin Tanzeem and junior Antonia Nugent lost at flights five and six, respectively.
