TAMPA - UAB third baseman Nicole Tumlin drove in two runs in the bottom of the third to propel the Blazers to a 2-0 win over the Drake Bulldogs, advancing them to the championship game of the USF "The Game" Tournament in Tampa, Fla. The Blazers (8-6) will face the University of South Florida Bulls, who defeated UAB 4-2 earlier in the day.
In the first game, Lindsay Stanley reached second base on an error by the USF third baseman to lead off the game for the Blazers. Stanley later scored on Amanda Antonovich's single to give UAB a 1-0 edge.
The Bulls tied the game at one in the top of the second on three singles.
UAB went back on top in the bottom of the fourth when Stanley plated Leigh Walker with a single.
USF battled back in the fifth to take a two-run lead. The Bulls knocked two singles and two doubles to put three runs across. USF (10-5) shut down the Blazers in the final two innings to pick up the win and the no. 1 seed in the tournament.
The loss put UAB at the no. 2 seed against the no. 3 seed Drake Bulldogs for the second game of the day.
Stanley got the offense rolling again with a single to lead off the third. After Stanley stole second, Holly Krzan walked and Andrea Rogers slapped a single to load the bases for Nicole Tumlin. Tumlin dropped a single down the leftfield line to plate Stanley and Krzan plowed into the third baseman who was standing in the base path and was awarded home to give UAB a 2-0 lead.
Drake threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases before Jennifer Nelson froze the final batter and gave UAB a 2-0 win.
Nelson (6-2) struck out eight en route to her second shutout of the season.
The Blazers will look to avenge their loss to the Bulls in the championship game of the tournament on Sunday. USF, 3-0 in the tournament, defeated Eastern Michigan 8-0 on Saturday to earn a spot in the championship game. The two teams will square off at 12:30 p.m. (ET).
