UAB Men's Tennis Team Edges Memphis, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team captured the doubles point and then got singles victories from a trio of freshmen to edge Conference USA foe Memphis, 4-3, Friday at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
Freshman Tim Bauer provided the clinching point at No. 3 singles as he rallied from 5-2 deficits in both sets to outlast the Tigers' Benedikt Fischer, 7-6, 7-6. For Bauer, the singles win was his eighth in the past 10,
UAB (7-5, 3-1) also got singles wins at No. 5 from Alex Emery and at No. 6 singles from Thomas Petrich. Emery defeated Cody Loup by a 6-3, 6-3 score while Petrich was a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner over the Tigers' Spencer Heflin.
A huge factor in the Blazers' win was their win in doubles. UAB got a win at the No. 2 position as Bauer and Hanns Spangenberg teamed for an 8-1 win over Charlie Ramsay and Amrit Narasimhan.
UAB sealed the doubles point at No. 3 as Emery and Thomas Weiss downed the Memphis duo of Heflin and Garrison Pilant by a 9-8 score. The Blazers dropped the No. 1 doubles match as Kruno Despotovski and Adrian Tollstam fell to the UM team of Fischer and Narasimhan, 9-7.
"Memphis has been winning in doubles," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "I knew if we could win the doubles point, we had a good chance to win the match. "These were two evenly-matched teams. Tim Bauer was great today. He came back from down 5-2 in both sets in singles. I was really happy to see the way he battled back. Our freshmen came through for us today."
