STARKVILLE, Miss. -The Mississippi State Bulldogs (28-19, 9-10 SEC) took advantage of walks and Blazer errors to knock off UAB, 4-1, at the MSU Softball Stadium. Although the Blazers (27-23, 8-9 C-USA) dropped their third consecutive decision, centerfielder Lindsay Stanley slapped her 64th base hit of the season, breaking UAB's single-season record of 63, which she had hit the past two seasons.
Despite picking up the loss, pitcher Jennifer Nelson (18-11) had another solid outing, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out five.
Mississippi State took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk, stolen base and double down the leftfield line.
The Blazers responded to tie the game in the top of the fourth when second baseman Leigh Walker led off the inning with a single up the middle. Walker then stole second and later scored on Nelson's single into leftfield.
The Bulldogs re-took the lead when they put a run across on a sacrifice bunt in bottom half of the inning. The leadoff batter walked, then stole second and made her way home when the Blazers threw down to first on the sacrifice to get the batter out.
MSU added a run to its lead in the fifth, again plating a runner who had reached first base on a walk. The Bulldogs took advantage of a Blazer error to put the run across and make it 3-1.
State tacked on another run in the sixth, using a pair of base-hits and a dropped throw at the plate to finish off the Blazers 4-1.
It marks the second time this season that UAB has lost to MSU and the Blazers fall to 1-8 against the Bulldogs.
UAB will resume conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Southern Miss at George Ward Park. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and round out the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
