Women's Tennis Team Falls To Southern Miss, 4-0

TULSA, Okla. ----- The UAB women's tennis team saw its 11-match win streak come to an end here Friday as the Blazers fell in their quarterfinal round match to Southern Miss, 4-0, at the 2007 Conference USA Championships.
Fourth-seeded UAB (14-2), which moved into the FILA national rankings this week at No. 70, saw the tables turned by a Southern Miss team the Blazers had defeated, 4-3, last Sunday in Birmingham.
The Golden Eagles (17-5), seeded No. 5 in the tournament, won the doubles point and then reeled off singles wins at the No. 1, 4 and 6 positions. It was Sherry Price at No. 1 who provided the clinching win as she defeated UAB's Gulsah Esen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
"This is a disappointing loss for us," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Southern Miss is a quality team, no doubt about that, and I think we really are two evenly-matched teams. But today, it just wasn't our day. I'm disappointed for our girls, and especially our group of seniors.
"These girls (Annemieke Elsholz, Nischa Maier-Knapp, Samrin Tanzeem and Julia von Samson) had great careers and this match won't take anything away from that."
Ertunga pointed to a lineup switch for Southern Miss at No. 5 and 6 singles from their match last Sunday. "I thought we had a better matchup last Sunday at those spots," he said.
The Golden Eagles claimed the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Price and Brittany Serret defeated UAB's team of Elsholz and von Samson at No. 1, 8-6. Meanwhile, the Blazers' duo of Esen and Maier-Knapp fell at No. 2, 8-3, to USM's Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman.
Southern Miss also got wins at No. 4 singles by Dellocono, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Magdalena Czernik, and at No. 6 as Gutterman downed Tanzeem, 6-3, 7-5.
