BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB softball head coach Marla Townsend announced Thursday the signing of four high school players that will suit up for the Blazers in the fall of 2009. All four athletes are from the state of Alabama.
The four that signed with the Blazers are Kate Armstrong, an infielder from Vestavia High School; Alyssa Brown, a catcher/infielder from Alexandria High School; Hailey Glynn, a outfielder/infielder from Pelham High School; Lauren Webster, a pitcher from Alabama Christian Academy.
"The 2009 recruiting class is one that I am extremely excited about," said Townsend. "These ladies know what it takes to win and they are willing to work hard at UAB to continue their tradition of winning. This class is well-rounded. We have a strong middle infielder in Kate Armstrong, a fearless corner/catcher in Alyssa Brown, a very talented outfielder in Hailey Glynn, and an outstanding pitcher in Lauren Webster."
Armstrong was named to the 2008 Over the Mountain Team. She plays for the Alabama Pride during the summer and recorded back to back top-five finishes at the ASA National Championships. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. From 2006-07 Armstrong was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete.
Brown has played on her high school's varsity softball team since seventh grade. She was a member of the 4A state championship team in 2004. She was named All-County and All-State from 2005-08 as both a catcher and an infielder. She has been named a Top 9 Area Diamond Dazzler since 2006. Brown plays summer ball with the Birmingham Vipers who posted a second place finish at the NSA World Series in Panama City, Fla. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Principal's Club.
Glynn was named to the 2008 AHSAA North/South All-Star Team, the 2008 Birmingham News 6A All-Classification Team and the 2008 Shelby All-County Team. Her high school squad was the 6A Area 10 runner up in 2007 and 2008. During the summer she played for the Alabama Gold. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society.
Webster was named to the 4A All-State Team by the Birmingham News and was the Alabama Sports Writers' Association Pitcher of Year for the past two seasons. The Montgomery Advertiser tabbed her All-Metro Team pitcher in both her junior and sophomore seasons. She also helped lead Alabama Christian Academy to a 4A high school championship in 2007. Webster was a Wendy's High School Heisman Finalist in 2008 and a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society.
"These ladies are as dedicated in the classroom as they are out on the field," said Townsend. "Their transition to college life and athletics at UAB is going to be smooth. They have all had good high school and travel coaches who have prepared them for immediate success as a Blazer."
