TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- The UAB softball team, backed by a one-hitter from Kayla Harris, defeated Bethune-Cookman, 2-0, before falling to Michigan State, 5-1, Friday at the Seminole Classic.
Harris was on cruise control for most of the game and gave up her only hit in the top of the seventh inning to the 22nd batter she faced. Krzan went 3-for-3, while Andrea Rogers and Laura Callaway both drove in runs for UAB.
"Obviously we were really happy with how Kayla pitched today," Townsend said. "She attacked their hitters and didn't really get in trouble the entire game."
Harris (3-1) fanned five over seven innings, while recording her second career one-hit outing.
Andrea Rogers scored in the second inning on Laura Callaway's single to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead, after beginning the inning with a single to center. Leigh Walker would score the Blazers' second run in the third on a Rogers' groundout.
UAB held an opponent scoreless for the third time this season.
In game two, the Blazers fell behind early to Michigan State.
MSU cracked the scoreboard on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. The Spartans would score two runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a victory in their first game.
The Blazers pulled within two runs, 3-1, in the fourth inning with a solo homer from Walker, the second of the season for her.
UAB had only two hits, Walker's home run and a Cameron Skates double.
"We need to find a way to score more runs," Townsend said. "We are doing a good job of getting the ball in play, but not of hitting the ball hard. We also need to be better at the plate with runners on."
Nelson (3-2) tossed six innings in the loss. She allowed five runs on six hits, while striking out three.
The Blazers take the diamond Saturday against Jacksonville at 4:45 p.m.
