Blazers Lose To No. 68 East Carolina, 5-2

SAN JUAN, P.R. - The UAB women's tennis team (7-2, 1-1 C-USA) lost to 68th-ranked East Carolina (12-2, 1-0 C-USA), 5-2, Thursday afternoon at the Palmas Del Mar Resort. The Blazers won the doubles point before the Pirates came back to win five of the six singles contests.
Senior Antonia Nugent and freshman Evelien Strijker won 8-2 at No. 1 singles and then senior Seden Soyalp and freshman Jenny Cape won 8-3 at No. 3 to claim the doubles point.
Senior Gulsah Esen and freshman Giorgia Romeo lost 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Romeo won 6-0, 7-5 to record the team's only single win at No. 6.
Strijker lost in a third set superbreaker at No. 1 singles, while Esen dropped the first set in her match at No. 2 singles, 7-5, before being forced to retire.
Nugent lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Cape lost 6-3, 6-3 at flight four. Soyalp lost a tightly contested match at No. 5, 6-4, 7-6.
The Blazers will be back on the courts on Friday, March 21 when they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State at 2:00 p.m.
