BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team will face a familiar foe when it begins play Friday in Dallas at the 2008 Conference USA Championship.
The Blazers, 12-2 overall and seeded fourth in the tournament, will take on No. 5 seed UCF in first round action Friday at 8:00 a.m. CT. UAB has played the Knights each of the past two seasons in the C-USA Championship and come out a winner on both occasions.
Interestingly enough, the Blazers have won the tournament matchup with UCF the past two years after losing to the Knights during the regular season. Both teams had the same seeding the past two years that they have this weekend.
UAB defeated UCF 4-3 last April at Orlando in C-USA first round play while two years ago, also in Orlando, the Blazers came out 4-2 winners over the Knights.
This year, UAB knocked off UCF in regular season play, winning 4-3 in the C-USA Shootout in February at Hattiesburg, Miss.
UAB enters this weekend¹s conference tournament ranked No. 70 nationally in the latest FILA/ITA rankings. The Blazers have won 11 of their last 12 matches.
The winner of the UAB/UCF match will then take on the winner of the match between No. 1 seed and ninth-ranked Tulsa and Southern Miss.
The tournament will be played at the SMU Tennis Center.
