Birmingham, Ala. - UAB track and field head coach Ray Stanfield has added four additional faces to the women's cross country team for 2008.
Joining the Blazers for the upcoming season will be Rhiannon Johns, Lucy Taylor, Clara Cid and Sandra Lundberg.
"On paper, this is the best class that I've ever signed since I've been here," said head Stanfield. "Their credentials from their high school careers show that they are a talented group."
Johns comes to UAB as a distinguished runner from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. She was the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) Regional cross country champion as a senior. Johns also holds numerous city and NOSSA records in both the 1500 meters and 3000 meters.
Taylor, a native from Arlington Heights, Ill., was a four-time state qualifier in the 4x800 relay, placing second in 2008. She was also named to the all-conference cross country team in 2005 and 2006.
Both Cid and Lundberg will be coming to UAB after outstanding high school careers in Europe. Cid hails from Zaragoza, Spain, while Lundberg is a native of Ekero, Sweden.
The four new additions will bring a total of seven true freshmen to the team, joining Alabama natives Katie Jorgenson and Kristina Vaughn, and Illinois' Colleen Standridge.
"I'm really excited about this season,' said Stanfield. "There are a few unknowns, but talent-wise, this is a great group of athletes."
The 2008 cross country season begins Aug. 30 in Nashville, Tenn. at the Belmont Opener.
