Blazer Juniors Lead Way At Baras Fall Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn . ----- A trio of UAB juniors paced the way for the Blazer men's tennis team here Friday on the first day of the Baras Fall Classic.
The tournament being hosted by UT Chattanooga is the first action of the fall season for the Blazers.
Junior Dan Cornei, seeded No. 2 in the A2 singles division, got off to a fast start in the new season as he downed Renato Antun of Belmont, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in second round play after receiving a first round bye. Cornei now advances to the semifinal round.
Also in the A2 division Tyrone Ewels won his first match (6-1, 6-2 over Mario Hernandez) before falling to Corrado Tocci of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 6-4.
The Blazers didn't fare as well in the A1 singles division. Top seed Brian Ly dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (2) decision at No. 1 singles after receiving a first round bye in the tournament. Joao Pallielo of Belmont spioiled the debut of Blazer freshman Daniel Mozer with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over the New Zealand native.
In B1 singles play, UAB has a pair of players who have reached the semifinal round. Junior Alex Emery took a 6-1, 6-4 win over Belmont's Javier Rodriguez after outlasting Stafan Solomon of Jacksonville State, 7-6. 3-6, 7-5. Meanwhile, Thomas Petrich won a pair of matches to join Emery in the semifinals of the B1 flight. Petrich defeated Gustavo Holz of Jacksonville State by a score of 6-3, 6-4 to move into the semifinals.
In doubles action, UAB's team of Ewels and Moser were first round winners in the A1 division.
