TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ----- The UAB men's tennis team enjoyed another productive day Saturday at the Seminole Invitational, winning 6-of-8 singles matches and going 2-2 in doubles. The Blazers' Thomas Petrich will play in a singles final Sunday while Tyrone Ewels and Daniel Moser will compete in a doubles final.
Petrich is in the "B" Division singles final after winning a pair of matches on Saturday. Petrich advanced with a quarterfinal round win over Graham Edgar of North Florida, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, and then followed that with a 4-1, ret. victory over Mississippi State's Tanner Stump.
Petrich's teammate, Danny Manlow, came up just short of joining Petrich in a singles final, as he was defeated in the "A" Division semifinals.
Manlow downed Andres Bucaro of Florida State, 7-5, 6-0, in Saturday's quarterfinals before falling to Florida's Eric Corace by a 6-3, 7-5 score. UAB's Ewels, who like Manlow, had won twice in "A" Division singles Friday, fell to USF's Mark Oljaca, 6-4, 7-5, in his quarterfinal match.
The Blazers were perfect Saturday in their consolation round matches. In "A" Division singles, UAB's Moser downed UCF's Blaze Schwartz, 7-6, 6-4, while Alex Emery defeated Jacksonville's Victor Vaz, 6-4, 6-4.
In the "B" Division singles consolation round, John Hollimon won in straight sets over Jacksonville's Andrew Lerner, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, UAB's duo of Moser and Ewels advanced to Sunday's "A" Division final with two wins on Saturday. The Blazer tandem beat Bethune-Cookman's Jeff Smallwood and Marc Misanovic, 5-0, ret., before ousting David Jackson and Michael Moore of Florida A&M, 8-5.
Jackson and Moore had outlasted UAB's team of Emery and Manlow, in quarterfinal play, 8-5, earlier in the day.
In "B" Division doubles, the Blazers' Hollimon/Petrich team fell to UCF's Claudio Romano and Mario Samson, 8-4.
