UAB Tennis Team Impressive At Seminole Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ----- The UAB men's tennis team enjoyed a successful first day of action here Friday at the Seminole Invitational.
The Blazers won 12-of-15 matches overall, going 9-3 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.
Tyrone Ewels and Danny Manlow both won a pair of singles matches in the "A" division to advance to the third round. Ewels claimed two three-set victories, defeating Blaze Schwartz of UCF, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, before rallying to oust Florida's Johnny Hamui, the nation's No. 117-ranked player, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (1).
Manlow, a sophomore transfer from Wofford, downed Jacksonville's Victor Vaz, 6-3, 6-3, in his first match. He then defeated David Jackson of Florida A&M, 6-4, 6-0.
The Blazers' Daniel Moser, also competing in the "A" division, lost his first match in three sets, falling by a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 score to USF's Juan Carlos Acuna. Moser came back to win his consolation bracket match over FAMU's Michael Moore, 6-4, 6-1.
Alex Emery had similar results as he fell in his first match in a tightly-contested match (lost to Andres Bucaro of Florida State, 6-7, 6-0, 7-6 (5)). Emery bounced back to post a 6-1, 6-4 win over North Florida's Kurt Gattiker.
In the "B" draw, UAB's Thomas Petrich won twice in straight sets. He beat Jacksonville's Jimmy Esteban, 6-1, 6-1, before downing Alain Garrido of Georgia Southern, 6-3, 6-0.
John Hollimon lost to FAMU's Harold Williams, 6-1, 6-2, in his first match.
In doubles action, Emery and Manlow teamed in the "A" draw to defeat Florida's team of Erik Corace and William Federhofer. Also in the "A" division, the Blazer tandem of Ewels and Moser advanced past USF's Alex Pukai and Yannick Yoshizawa, 8-4.
In the "B" doubles draw, UAB's team of Hollimon and Petrich won by an 8-6 score over FSU's Owen Long and Keith Embree.
Play will continue Saturday.
