UAB Tennis Has Successful Day At Crimson Tide Fall Invitational

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team enjoyed a successful first day of play here Friday at the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational as four Blazers won twice in singles action.
The tournament features 16 teams playing in five singles draws of 16 players. There will be two doubles draws of 32 teams contested.
Sophomore Daniel Moser won both of his singles matches Friday in the Namath division. He downed Joe Young of Tulane, 3-6, 6-3 7-5, and then defeated Tennessee's Davey Sandgren, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the semifinal round.
In the Stabler division, UAB's Alex Emery won a pair of three-set matches. He beat Tennessee Tech's Oscar Pachon, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 in his first round match before disposing of Jacksonville State's Nenad Marcec, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
The Blazers have two players still alive in the Stallings draw. Dan Cornei beat Southern Miss' Markus Wessinghage, 7-5, 6-2, and the downed Mark Paetz of Georgia Southern, 6-2, 6-0.
Also reaching the semifinals was UAB senior Thomas Petrich. Petrich was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Chris Leeper of Kentucky and the knocked off Tulane's Coby Kramer-Golinloff, 7-6, 6-2.
In the top division, the Bryant draw, UAB sophomore Danny Manlow won his first round match (6-4, 6-1 over Jacksonville State's Bryan Kenyon) but then fell to Kentucky's Alex Musialek, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinal round.
UAB's John Hollimon also went 1-1 on Friday in singles. He was a 7-6, 6-4 winner over Memphis' Spencer Heflin before he fell to Alabama's Creighton Blanchard in three sets, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
Tyrone Ewels was the final Blazer in action Friday. He dropped a close opening round match to Roberto Viera of UT Chattanooga, 6-4, 7-6.
