BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Giorgia Romeo, Brittany DeFelice and Jenny Cape all won singles matches in straight sets Monday as the UAB women's tennis team defeated Jacksonville State, 6-1.
The Blazers improved their dual match record to 1-1 on the season while handing Jacksonville State its first loss. The Gamecocks are now 3-1.
UAB opened the match by taking the doubles point on the strength of a 9-7 win from Evelien Strijker and Paula Alvarez at the No. 1 position and an 8-4 victory by DeFelice and Romeo at the No. 2 spot.
After posting the best doubles result of the afternoon, Romeo and DeFelice continued their strong play in singles. The duo combined to lose just 10 games between them at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions as Romeo picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win and DeFelice cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The matches were tighter at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots, but Strijker and Alvarez -- who both dropped the first set in their matches -- each came through in three sets as UAB sealed the team victory. At No. 5 singles, UAB's Jenny Cape pulled out a pair of tight sets for a 7-6, 6-4 win and the Blazers' final singles point.
"It was good to come out here today and get our first win at home," UAB head coach Krissy Hall Said. "I'm happy with some of the things we were able to do today, and I'm especially proud of Evelien and Paula for fighting back to win their matches after losing the first set."
Ceylan Engin suffered the Blazers' only singles defeat at the No. 6 position.
UAB returns to the court again Friday when the Blazers host North Florida at 2 p.m. Friday's match, like Monday's, will be played on campus at the 11th Avenue South tennis courts, located between 16th and 17th Street South.
