Women's Tennis Falls Saturday At No. 27 Auburn

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On Saturday, the UAB women's tennis team faced its toughest opponent so far in No. 27 Auburn, and the Blazers suffered a 7-0 defeat on the road at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
With the loss, UAB falls to 2-2 in the spring season, while Auburn improves to 2-4, having lost four times to ranked opponents.
In Saturday's contest, Paula Alvarez played the closest singles match for UAB. The freshman lost in three sets at No. 3 singles to Auburn's Whitney Chappell, falling 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-2).
At No. 1 singles, UAB's Evelien Strijker lost in straight sets to Fani Chifchieva, the fifth-ranked player in the country. And at No. 2 singles, Giorgia Romeo fell in straight sets to Auburn's 72nd-ranked Melissa Koning.
Brittany DeFelice and Jenny Cape also dropped matches in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while UAB forfeited the No. 6 position because of injuries for the second straight day.
In doubles action, UAB's No. 1 team of Alvarez and Strijker played the closest match, falling 8-4 to the 20th-ranked doubles team of Koning and Alex Haney.
UAB had won two straight matches before Saturday's loss. The Blazers return to action Wednesday when they head across town to battle Samford. That match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT start.
