JONESBORO, Ark. -- UAB won the doubles point but came up empty in singles action as Arkansas State earned a 6-1 win in Friday's women's tennis match.
The Blazers' No. 1 doubles team of Paula Alvarez and Evelien Strijker earned an 8-4 victory, and the No. 3 duo of Jenny Cape and Ceylan Engin won 8-6 as UAB earned the doubles point for the second consecutive match.
But the Blazers could not carry their momentum over into the singles competition. Engin forced her match to three sets for UAB at No. 5 singles, but Arkansas State won in straight sets at the top four positions. The Blazers were forced to forfeit the No. 6 position because of injuries.
With the loss, UAB fell to 5-6 on the season. Arkansas State extended its winning streak to six matches and now owns a 10-5 record for the year.
Friday's match was the first of seven in a row away from Birmingham for UAB to close out the regular season. The Blazers now have a week off before traveling to Spartanburg, S.C., for matches with Wofford and USC Upstate on March 28 and 29.
