Blazer Men's Tennis Team Downs DePaul, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team took the doubles point and then won four of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over visiting DePaul here Saturday at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
It was junior Alex Emery's win at No. 4 singles that not only provided the clinching fourth point in the match, but it also was one of the better comeback victories of the season for the Blazers.
UAB (9-10) will try to even their record Sunday when the play host to Texas San Antonio at 11:00 a.m.
Emery gave the Blazers their clinching win as he rallied from a 6-0, 2-0 deficit to win 11 of the next 12 games in beating Ben Hartman, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
"This was a nice win for us," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "The guys came ready to play today. We've said all season long that we have good players. We have just had a difficult time putting together a sustained effort. We'll have another tough challenge tomorrow against a good opponent in UT San Antonio."
UAB also captured singles wins at No. 3 (Daniel Moser), No. 5 (Tyrone Ewels) and No. 6 (Thomas Petrich). The Blue Demons (13-9) won at No. 1 and 2 singles.
Moser continued his outstanding freshman season. The New Zealand native improved his dual match singles record to 13-6 as he defeated Alasdair Graetz, 6-3, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Ewels was equally impressive with his win at No. 5. He remained unbeaten at that position (5-0) with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bartosz Jozwiak. Petrich was a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 winner over Vania Grgec at the No. 6 spot, playing a super tiebreaker in the third set after Emery had clinched the match.
DePaul (13-9) got its two wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Austin Doerner downed UAB's Dan Cornei at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2 and Jose Moncada was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at No. 2 over the Blazers' Brian Ly.
The Blazers were winners in doubles at No. 2 (Emery and Ly) and at No. 3 (Ewels and Moser).
In doubles, the Blazers got off to a good start, taking a 1-0 lead with their two wins. Emery and Ly were 8-2 winners at No. 2 over Graetz and Moncada while Ewels and Moser took an 8-5 win over Grgec and Jozwiak at the No. 3 position.
The Blue Demons won at No. 1 doubles as Doerner and Hartman bested UAB's Dennis Ehrlich and Slawomir Szeremeta, 8-6.
