UAB Tennis Team Edged By East Carolina, 4-3

GREENVILLE, N.C. ----- The UAB men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision here Friday to host East Carolina at the Conference USA Shootout.
The Blazers (7-8) and No. 70-ranked Pirates (16-1) split the six singles matches with each decided in straight sets, but it was the doubles point that proved to be the difference as ECU swept UAB in all three doubles matches.
After UAB rallied to take a 3-2 lead, East Carolina tied the match with a win at No. 2 singles before capturing the deciding point with a win at No. 1 as Jaroslav Horvath outlasted the Blazers' Dan Cornei, 7-6, 6-4.
ECU took a 1-0 lead with its sweep in doubles. The middle of the UAB lineup proved to be the strength Friday as the Blazers rallied with wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 singles positions.
Brian Ly took a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles over ECU's Denis Ermilov. At No. 4 singles, UAB freshman Daniel Moser extended his win streak to six straight in singles and 10 of the last 11 as he downed Henrik Skalmerud, 6-4, 6-2.
Tyrone Ewels provided the Blazers their other singles win as he took a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles over Aleksey Kochetov.
In addition to the clinching match at No. 1 singles by Horvath, the Pirates were winners at No. 2 as Stephen Whitwell defeated UAB's Alex Emery, 7-6, 6-3. Also, Bryan Oakley beat UAB's Thomas Petrich at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Play will continue Saturday at ECU as UAB goes against UCF in its second of three matches this weekend at the C-USA Shootout.
