HATTIESBURG, Miss. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won 14 of its 17 matches played Friday on the first day of play here at the Southern Miss Fall Invite.
The Blazers were set to open their fall schedule last weekend at the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational, but inclement forced the cancellation of the tournament after only a few matches were played on the opening day.
UAB won 12 of 14 singles matches and two of three in doubles on Friday against competition from the University of New Orleans, Nicholls State and Conference USA foes Tulane and Southern Mississippi.
Sophomore Danny Manlow, making his Blazers' debut after transferring from Wofford, won both of his singles matches in straight sets. Manlow downed UNO's Ben Smith, 6-2, 6-1, before defeating Tulane's Shaye Wali by a 6-2, 6-2.
Manlow was one of five UAB players to win a pair of singles matches on Friday. Daniel Moser, Alex Emery, Dan Cornei and John Holliman also won twice in singles.
In doubles, Emery and Manlow teamed to defeat USM's duo of Diego Machuca and Markus Wessinghage, 8-3, at the No. 1 position. At No. 3 doubles, Cornei and Thomas Petrich were 8-4 winners over the team of Dominik Kardell and Felipe Sylva, 8-4. Emery and Moser lost their No. 2 doubles match to the Golden Eagles' Strate Krstevski and Oscar Machuca, 8-6.
Play will continue on Saturday as the Blazers will play Tulane in doubles before a singles matchup in the afternoon with host Southern Miss.
