BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB's Rhiannon Johns was selected as the Conference USA Cross Country Athlete of the Week after running to a first-place finish at last week's Samford Invitational. This marks Johns' second career weekly honor.
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada product ran the challenging Veterans Park 5K course in a winning time of 17:52.53. Johns was one of five Blazers to finish in the top 10 and helped UAB take the team title with 29 points.
"Right now Rhi is training as well as at any point in her career and she's only getting started for this fall," UAB head coach Blake Boldon said. "Starting this weekend she'll have the chance to compete in three national level races. I'm excited to see what she can do against some of the best in the NCAA."
Johns and the cross country team will return to action this Saturday at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Ark. hosted by Arkansas. The women's 5K race is slated for a 10:30 a.m. CT start.
