Doubles Team Falls In Quarters At ITA Southern Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ----- The UAB doubles team of Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser came up short Saturday as the Blazer tandem fell in their quarterfinal match at the ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Manlow and Moser lost to No. 2 seed and 11th-ranked George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin of Mississippi State, 8-5, after winning earlier in the day over Troy's Tommy Cundy and Sami Ghorbel, 8-3.
Another Blazer doubles duo, Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman, was edged by No. 1 seeded Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann of Ole Miss, 9-8, in a round of 16 match.
UAB's three players who entered the day still alive in the main draw of singles all suffered defeats on Saturday. Freshman Chris Helliar was beaten by Ole Miss' Tucker Vorster, 6-1, 6-0 in his third round match.
Manlow lost in three sets to South Alabama's Romain Bocaert, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, while Zimmerman dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Mississippi State's Malte Stropp.
The Blazers had a good day in the consolation draw of singles on Saturday as three players were winners to advance to Sunday's round of 16.
Dan Cornei downed Tulane's Shay Wali, 7-6, 6-2, and then outlasted Brandon Farine of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Moser won two matches in straight sets, defeating Adam Bernstein of Tulane, 7-5, 6-3, and then ousting Parker Allen of South Alabama, 6-0, 6-0.
John Hollimon had a bye before defeating Eric Matthieson of Jacksonville State 6-4, 6-1.
Puetz lost his consolation singles match on Saturday, falling to Idan Mark of Tulane, 6-2, 6-2. James Gardner also fell in his consolation match, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Jacksonville State's Felipe Watanabe.
